To make cliff faces, rocks and etc. I usually use the off-cuts of 2" blue and pink foam from other projects. Because I use a hack-saw to shape and cut the pieces have a very nice rough (but not too rough) finish. What I've also found is that if you break the foam it looks just like rock and paints up really well. I use a black undercoat and drybrush up with browns and grays.
